New Year’s is one of the most celebrated days in the world. It’s the most wonderful time of the year, full of gifts and long-awaited surprises for those kids who didn’t misbehave.

According to a survey among young adults (published at Statista.com) in 2015, about 72 percent of respondents said that they typically spent New Year’s Eve at home. Slightly above 20 percent stated that they were guests at someone else’s home on New Year’s Eve, and about 10 percent celebrated in a restaurant, bar or club.

Cement is one of the world’s key building materials, both in the residential and non-residential sectors. This material is also used in the production of concrete. Thus, over 70 percent of cement sales in the United States were made to producers of ready-mixed concrete, and about 12 percent of sales went to concrete product manufacturers. According to information published at Statista.com, around 4,100 million metric tons of cement were produced globally in 2015. The U.S. accounted for about 83.4 million metric tons of this production. The year before, 4,180 million metric tons of material were produced worldwide, and 83.2 million metric tons were produced in the U.S. In 2013, these numbers decreased: 4,080 million metric tons globally and about 77.4 million metric tons in the U.S.

If we examine the statistics representing first-time homebuyers in the United States in 2015, we see that a majority of buyers in the 35-and-under age group were first-time buyers, at 67 percent. About 26 percent, of 36 to 50-year-olds were first-time buyers in 2015. The share of first-time buyers in the 51 to 60-year-old age group amounted to 11 percent, while people aged 61 to 69 who were first-time buyers only made up 6 percent.

When is an age difference between partners a little too large? A common rule is that you cannot date someone younger than half your age plus seven. For example, if you are 30, dating someone 22 years old is just barely acceptable under this rule.

The following chart illustrates this concept: Couples between the dashed lines are the ones following the rule.

Automatic braking is still considered a novelty in the car world. However, the technology is maturing, causing many people to question if it’s going to be seen in more and more new cars each year. Can it really help significantly reduce the number of road fatalities?

Eleven percent of all fatal crashes in 2016 involved at least one driver who was distracted or drowsy — a record low figure (that means just under 3,800 crashes in absolute terms). We can consider this number a ballpark estimate for how many lives could have been saved by Automatic Emergency Braking (AEB).

The geographic properties of an area often dictate the type of businesses that can locate themselves there. For example, you can’t have an inland naval base. Farms and agriculture, in general, are less likely to prosper on rocky mountains than on sunny plains. But today, with all the technological advancements we have, many jobs in intellectual labor, including IT, finance, hi-tech manufacturing and other new industries seem less likely to depend on climatic features.

To summarize then climate features of a territory, we used the existing climate zones classification prepared by the U.S. Department of Energy. Each county is assigned to one of eight climate zones. Definitions of these zones depend not on temperatures, but rather on accumulated heat (the unit is called “degree-days”). Zone 1 has the warmest climate, while zone 8 has the coldest — in the U.S., only certain parts of Alaska belong to this climate zone. We present a map of the climate zones below; you can click to zoom in on a state of interest.

How do people choose names for their children? It’s no secret that quite a few name their boys and girls after different celebrities — actor names seem to be one of the common choices.

Is this truly the case? Were there a lot of Dustins born right after “Rain Man” hit the cinema screens? Let’s take a look.

What is cloud computing and why is it important?  In recent years there has been a surge in the number of internet-based services that provide shared computer resources, minimizing both upfront and continuing maintenance costs for new projects. It is often considered most useful for smaller setups, as it allows access to a significant amount of resources regardless of the project size.

Despite technically existing since the 1990s, the technology only really took off in 2009 (Microsoft announced its Azure service in October 2008). After this, it didn’t take long for major U.S. companies to start patenting their developments.

The “cloud” term started gaining popularity in new U.S. patents in 2010. We can already say that it was not a one-time fad — each year since then, the total number of patents including the term has increased.
